Legend has it in the 19th century, at the height of the Napoleonic wars a ship was wrecked off the coast of Hartlepool, and a wee monkey washed ashore.

The townsfolk, fearing the monkey to be a french spy, promptly hung the poor thing. earning the people of hartlepool the affectionate nickname of “monkey hanger”
